This year has brought about many exciting changes for Map the System.

Map the System has experienced a dynamic excitement this year, expanding to 20 participating institutions with a vigorous enrollment of 774 students. The much-anticipated event, Canada Final 2024, will unfold at the Bella Concert Hall at Mount Royal University in Calgary, boasting a 513-seat capacity, with an estimated 255 attendees slated to be in the audience.

All the teams were exceptional and what was most impressive was how many students were first or second-year students
— James Stauch (2024), Executive Director, the Institute for Community Prosperity which brought Map the System to Canada

Enhancements in Accessibility and Tech

Embracing technology further, the event will be live-streamed on YouTube, simplifying access by eliminating the need for complex registration processes. This marks a significant shift from the previous Zoom live events, which in 2023, engaged 87 virtual participants.

Program Highlights and Academic Competition

Six exceptional Canadian teams will present their research, the culmination of their dedication since January 2024, having successfully competed in campus-level competitions. Awaiting them in May is expert coaching to hone their presentations. The event will also feature insightful speeches from industry notables, a local artist's performance, and a research showcase at the Riddell Library and Learning Centre – conveniently located adjacent to the Bella Concert Hall.

Andrea Klaiber-Langen, Vice President of ATCO Transformation, has championed a systemic approach to complex social challenges as she notes:

So often, we get into our work and think about the expertise we have and the work we know. We end up siloed, which happens whether on the public side, private or commercial side or in academia and we start to lose sight of what the problems might be and what the context for those problems are. So it is [our vision of the team] to embrace with a different way of thinking about what the problem space is… examine the contexts to give us opportunities to determine gaps and opportunities and get more thought diversity around those opportunities
— Andrea Klaiber-Langen, Vice President of ATCO Transformation

This is also the vision and initiative of ATCO’s inoculation of systems thinking within corporate culture, driving their sponsorship and partnership with Map the System.

Entering its 8th year, Map the System aspires to evolve as a nurturing platform where the future of change is in students’ vision.

Engaging in systems thinking through events like Map the System Final offers dual benefits: it helps problem-solvers streamline their thinking for greater productivity and exposes them to passionate presentations that inspire and educate
— Mai Trinh, Simon Fraser University, Map the System Alumni
